I don’t root for any specific team, but part of me was happy that Tennessee won yesterday so we would get a winner-take-all National Championship game tonight. It felt like a fitting end for what has been an exciting season from coast-to-coast, and the game itself certainly lived up to the hype.

A new college baseball champion has been crowned and it is the Tennessee Volunteers for the first time in school history. They prevailed Monday over the Texas A&M Aggies in Game 3 of the championship round of the College World Series, 6-5.

The first edition of the College World Series was held in 1947 at Hyames Field in Kalamazoo, Michigan. The tournament was held there again in 1948, but was moved to Lawrence Stadium in Wichita, Kansas for the 1949 tournament. Since 1950, the College World Series (CWS) has been held in Omaha, Nebraska. It was held at Rosenblatt Stadium from 1950 through 2010; starting in 2011, it has been held at Charles Schwab Field Omaha (formerly TD Ameritrade Park Omaha). The name “College World Series” is derived from that of the Major League Baseball World Series championship; it is currently an MLB trademark licensed to the NCAA.

The College World Series started last week with eight teams, but Virginia, NC State, North Carolina, Kentucky, Florida State and Florida were knocked out before Tennessee and Texas A&M advanced to the finals.

Texas A&M put two runners on in both the eighth and ninth innings, but were unable to scratch a run across. Tennessee’s pitching was excellent all afternoon, but especially righthander Aaron Combs who struck out five across four scoreless innings.
