Stories from baseball’s rich history are constantly being added to keep you connected to the game you love. Our stories explore the game on the field, its legendary contributors and baseball’s impact on American culture.

The television crews were in the visitors’ dugout, tiptoeing around champagne buckets to plug in their cameras. Players on the home side had begun planning flights for the offseason. A Most Valuable Player had been named.

Boston led Game 7 by a 3–0 score heading into the bottom of the sixth inning when New York rallied again, scoring 3 runs off Bruce Hurst to tie the game, and 3 more off of Schiraldi in the seventh to take a 6–3 lead. Buckner was 2–for–4 in the game, and scored 1 of Boston’s 2 runs in the eighth. However, the Mets also scored twice in the eighth and won 8–5, for their second and most recent World Series championship. Mookie Wilson meanwhile, went one for three in Game 7, scoring one of three runs the Mets plated in the sixth inning while trailing 3–0.

“Didn’t hit it great. Good, but not on the fat. Knew as soon as I hit it that I didn’t get it,” Hernandez said. “And then I did something I never do. I’d always trot off the field, no matter what the situation. I hated to walk off. But this time I walked. I was pissed because I hadn’t gotten a hit. And more pissed that because of some glitch, they’d just flashed ‘Congratulations Boston Red Sox, 1986 World Champs’ on the scoreboard.

Through the top of the sixth inning, the Cubs had a 3–0 lead, aided by Durham’s home run off Eric Show in the first inning. In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Padres cut the Cubs’ lead to 3–2 with a pair of singles by Alan Wiggins and Tony Gwynn, a walk to Steve Garvey, and sacrifice flies by Graig Nettles and Terry Kennedy. The bottom of the seventh inning kicked off with Carmelo Martínez walking on four pitches from Sutcliffe. Garry Templeton then sacrificed Martínez to second, setting things up for Tim Flannery. Martinez would then score when Flannery hit a sharp grounder that trickled through Leon Durham’s legs for an error.

Game world series two

It started early, with Tommy Edman hitting a solo shot in the bottom of the second inning off Carlos Rodón. The Yankees’ Juan Soto tied it up with his own solo blast in the following frame, but that would be one of the few hits the Yankees would collect all night.

The series was notable for being the first series to have a universal designated hitter (DH), which had alternated in prior years. 2022 also saw the first World Series no-hitter since Don Larsen’s perfect game in the 1956 World Series, when Astros pitchers Cristian Javier, Bryan Abreu, Rafael Montero, and Ryan Pressly combined to leave the Phillies hitless in Game 4. It was also the third postseason no-hitter in MLB history, after Roy Halladay’s no-hitter (also at Citizens Bank Park) in Game 1 of the 2010 National League Division Series.

In the first inning, Jeremy Peña hit an RBI double to score Jose Altuve for the first run. Yordan Alvarez followed with the third straight double to bring in the second run for the Astros. With that hit, Houston became the first World Series team to start a game with three straight extra-base hits. Alvarez scored the third run on an error. In the bottom of the fifth inning, Alex Bregman hit a two-run home to left field to make the score 5–0. Nick Castellanos scored the first run for the Phillies on a sacrifice fly by Jean Segura in the seventh inning to make it 5–1. In the top of the eighth inning, Kyle Schwarber hit a foul ball that was initially ruled a two-run home run, which would have made the score 5–3. Schwarber ended up flying out deep to right on the next pitch, again just missing a home run. In the top of the ninth inning, Alec Bohm scored on an error by first baseman Yuli Gurriel to make it 5–2, which proved to be the final score.

This was the last World Series before expanded interleague play. Starting in 2023, MLB began scheduling all 30 teams to play each other every year. As such, the Phillies defeated the Astros in two of three games in Houston from April 28-30, 2023 in a re-match of the World Series. Going forward, every World Series would be a re-match of a regular season series from earlier in the year.

In 2017, the open-world design of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was described by critics as being revolutionary and by developers as a paradigm shift for open-world design. In contrast to the more structured approach of most open-world games, Breath of the Wild features a large and fully interactive world that is generally unstructured and rewards the exploration and manipulation of its world. Inspired by the original 1986 Legend of Zelda, the open world of Breath of the Wild integrates multiplicative gameplay, where “objects react to the player’s actions and the objects themselves also influence each other”. Along with a physics engine, the game’s open-world also integrates a chemistry engine, “which governs the physical properties of certain objects and how they relate to each other”, rewarding experimentation. Nintendo has described the game’s approach to open-world design as “open-air”.

The first-person shooter video game series Call of Duty, developed by Infinity Ward and published by Activision, ranks among the top 10 games in the world. The latest major release in the series was Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War in 2020. The series, which includes 16 main titles and various spin-offs, immerses players in diverse historical periods from World War II to the Cold War and modern times.

Halo Infinite really did put the infinite in Halo. Well, not literally, but the wide open world really works for Master Chief and co. It’s not open world isn’t huge, but it encourages you to explore and progress through, unlocking new areas along the way. It’s a really great world to exist in, between the set pieces, with plenty of reasons to keep coming back. It’s the best Halo world yet for a reason.

The immersion goes beyond just the visuals though, as Frontiers of Pandora also does an admirable job of making players feel like they are controlling huge alien creatures that tower over humans. While the combat is not that far removed from the typical Ubisoft first-person experience, the game’s heightened mobility gives everything a different and refreshing flavor.

The diverse landscape changes from frozen lakes and snowy mountain edges to dusty plains and murky swamp waters. NPCs are responsive to your character’s honour bar and will react to your presence in town, depending on how well-behaved you’ve been. If a bounty is out for you, you’ll need to visit the local post office to pay it off before you can enter freely into ‘wanted’ territory or risk being hunted down by bounty hunters.
