To help remind everyone what made that night so special, we asked 12 MLB.com staffers who were at Busch Stadium that night (as well as one who wasn’t) to share a memory of that legendary game on October 27, 2011. These are their memories.

After seven years, this would be the final World Series to use the logo introduced in the 1980 series. Beginning the next year, a new logo in the style of a baseball diamond was introduced. The logo itself would receive minor updates throughout the years. In 1992, gold lettering was added which would remain for the rest of its tenure until it was retired altogether after the 1997 series.

Oil Can Boyd, the #3 starter for the Red Sox, was originally scheduled to start Game 7. The Mets had gotten to him early in Game 3, which they won 7–1 to record their first win of the series. Boyd gave up four runs in the first inning of Game 3 and six overall despite pitching into the seventh, getting only one run of support in the loss.

Knight advanced to second on the wild pitch. Several times during the ensuing series of pitches, second baseman Barrett realized that Knight was straying too far from the base and that if he could get Stanley to turn and throw to him, he would have an easy pickoff play and the inning could have ended there. Despite his best attempts, Barrett never was able to get Stanley to hear him as the sellout crowd at Shea Stadium was drowning him out, and Stanley instead chose to focus on getting Wilson out.

“Goodbye! Oh, what a blow! What a way to top it off!” Cosell yelled as the ball bounced off the black-painted batter’s eye and into a fan’s waiting hands. “Forget about who the Most Valuable Player is in the World Series. How this man has responded to pressure.”

He was swinging harder than he did during the regular season and walking more — eight walks in 37 plate appearances. He attributed the improvement to his work during the Yankees’ four off days between the regular season and the start of the AL Division Series.

Who are the starting pitchers?Dodgers: RHP Jack Flaherty (13-7, 3.17 ERA during regular season)Flaherty pitched well in Game 1 of the World Series, allowing two runs over 5 1/3 innings, and he will now get a chance to close out the Fall Classic for his hometown team. The right-hander struggled on regular rest against the Mets, allowing eight runs over three innings in Game 5 of the NLCS. But outside of that, Flaherty has been solid for the Dodgers this postseason.

The same issues that had been haunting New York through three games looked prevalent once again. But instead of rolling over and allowing the Dodgers to sweep and clinch a championship on the road, the Yankees’ offense found life.

• Freeman has now homered in six consecutive World Series games, dating back to 2021 with the Braves. That’s the longest streak in the Fall Classic, breaking a tie with Springer.
