The last time the Yankees were down 2-0 in the World Series was 1996. Just like this year, that team had broken a 15-year World Series drought but had fallen in the first two contests. The 2024 version is hoping history repeats itself starting tonight.

Best game in the world
Where to play: Nintendo Switch, Windows PCI’ve played well over 30 hours of Lorelei and the Laser Eyes on Steam Deck, and even more time in my notebook. Puzzle sickos Simogo created a real masterpiece of secrets that pulls together logic puzzles, alternative realities, and math into an iconic black-and-white mansion. It’s a puzzle box with puzzle boxes of its own tucked inside. And then there are puzzle boxes inside those puzzle boxes. It’s a game that feels like it’d be very easy to get frustrated by, but Simogo makes it clear that all of the answers exist inside the game, be it in books, scripts, or in posters on the walls. If something is totally baffling, you probably just don’t have the right answer. Like I alluded to earlier, so much of the game is played outside of the game screen. You need a notebook — that’s a directive even Simogo gives you early on. I said this in my review, but I’ve got pages of scribbles that look like nonsense to anyone else. Honestly, they’re likely nonsense to me now, too. I’ve never played anything like it, and I’m not sure I will again. —N. Carpenter
If Grand Theft Auto V is anything it’s a game of immense, obsessive detail. There is no open world that feels as authentic and lived-in as Grand Theft Auto V’s Los Santos and its surrounding countryside. Turn it on and pick a street. Analyse it. Look at the unique shopfronts that aren’t repeated anywhere else. Look at the asphalt, worn and cracked; punished by the millions of cars that have hypothetically passed over it. Look at the litter, the graffiti. Grand Theft Auto V’s mad mix of high-speed chases, cinematic shootouts, and hectic heists may be outrageous at times, but the environment it unfolds within is just so real. A technical titan and an endless source of emergent fun, it’s no wonder Grand Theft Auto V is one of the most successful games ever made. For all its inter-dimensional threats, monster hunts and magic powers, I’ve always thought The Witcher 3’s key achievement is in how it nails the mundane. Geralt’s fantasy world is one of mud, thatch and metal, his main quests are freelance work, and he loves a game of cards down the pub. That sense of reality is what helps you empathise with Geralt, understand the world, and really understand how bad things have gotten when the crazy shit starts popping off. An RPG with enough complexity to satisfy the urge to tinker, but enough character never to feel impersonal, Wild Hunt is a staggering achievement no matter how you look at it. Its story deftly balances cosmic threat and family drama, its choices feel truly meaningful and world-changingly effective, and it looks gorgeous in its own grubby way. Game out of this world
It’s amazing how much hasn’t changed from the Super Nintendo version save for the size of the characters which are much smaller in this version. The soundtrack is completely new in this one with the Sega CD version being hailed as mostly the definitive soundtrack to the game. I say mostly because Eric was practically against using a soundtrack and instead using ominous sounds as atmosphere.
Some will say that Another World‘s controls are hokey, or ropey. We say that they are exactly as they’re supposed to be. We’re not even going to cop-out and say that life is hokey and ropey, nor are we going to say that the characters in Gears of War move really slowly. We’re just going to say that everything bows to the game design. We believe that the highest compliment one can pay a single-player adventure game is that a two-player deathmatch mode, with each player controlling a clone of the main character, would be amazing. This is certainly the case in Another World: we can imagine a single-screen arena where players are free to set up shields, blast shields down, and take shots at one another. In that context, the controls would feel just right. It’d be at least as engaging as Pac-Man Vs., or as entertaining as four-player “Don’t Touch The Floor” in Bionic Commando: Rearmed.
The 3DO version of Out of This World is quite different from the other versions in terms of graphics and sound. The polygon backgrounds have been replaced by hand-drawn versions, the quality of which varies from stunning to amateurish. Music is played quite consistently throughout the game. It somewhat resembles a film score, and is similar to the music in the Sega CD sequel Heart of the Alien. The sound effects seem to be the same, however. Oddly enough, after the game is completed and the credits roll, the intro sequence from Heart of the Alien is played, with the same hand-drawn art style as the rest of the game. The gameplay has not changed at all. There is also a hidden mini-game by entering the password BRGR.
Animation of the principal characters was performed through a process called rotoscoping, whereby real objects were used as models for animation work, lending a life-like and quirky feel to the movement that might seem flat and predictable if animated through simple physics models. Lester’s appearance is supposedly based on Eric Chahi, the game’s designer. However, because Chahi found it disturbing to view himself as a character in the game, he decided to alter Lester’s appearance and depicted him as a redhead instead.
Out of This World was originally released for PC, Amiga, Atari, Macintosh, 3DO, SNES, Genesis and the Sega CD. The Atari and Amiga versions were developed first. They are relatively shorter compared to later versions, and have a higher difficulty level due to more precise timing required of the player. The PC version was the first to introduce a whole new level in the middle to latter third of the game to help lengthen the game and strengthen the narrative.
