Something explodes and implodes simultaneously deep inside the lab. A spherical hole replaces Lester’s chair. The screen hangs there for a moment, perfect, weighty cinematography befitting . . . cinema. Then there’s a crash, and a splash. Lester materializes in a pool of water. Vine-like tentacles begin to reach toward the sunlight on the surface of the pool.
The presentation is truly unique, and still to this day retains a special aura not often replicated. Making use of vector and polygon graphics, it not only allowed for an art style unseen to gamers, but also screen-filling objects with fluid animation. Despite having no words, the game is undoubtedly cinematic, with careful attention to lighting and shadows, and the cut scenes are directed with cleverly placed camera angles. The environment has a shade of blue constantly flowing through it, lending itself to a subconscious feeling of depression that never truly leaves you. Manga such as Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Ball influenced the way it suggests a lot with very little, character blurring effects such as the use of thin lines to suggest fast motion, and charging power attacks influenced by the Kamehameha. The game’s art style and atmosphere also drew influence from science fiction or fantasy art, including artists such as Frank Frazetta, Bernie Wrightson, and Zdzisław Beksiński, as well as the novel Hyperion.
