How will the bullpens line up after the starter?Dodgers: Anthony Banda, Alex Vesia, Michael Kopech and Blake Treinen pitched in both games and could be somewhat limited heading into Game 3. Having the off-day does help, but the Dodgers will need to be mindful of the fact that they have a bullpen game lined up for Tuesday’s Game 4. But if the Dodgers take an early lead and have an opportunity to win a third game in the series, Roberts will be aggressive with his high-leverage relievers.
For the Yankees, getting outfielder Juan Soto from the San Diego Padres proved to be crucial, as his clutch extra-inning home run in Game 5 of the ALCS helped his team secure a spot in the World Series.

Several players on this year’s Dodgers team were also on the World Series team in 2020, including Mookie Betts, Max Muncy, Kiké Hernández and Walker Buehler. Freeman won a title with the Atlanta Braves in 2021.
Dave Roberts had Walker Buehler hot and ready when he went to the mound to visit Blake Treinen after the Dodgers right-hander walked Jazz Chisholm Jr. with one out in the eighth inning, the Dodgers trying to hold onto a one-run lead for the title.
The tens of millions who watched it, in the United States and Japan and around the world, know that they did. Great baseball can be as filled with good (Jazz Chisholm Jr. stealing second and third before scoring in the 10th inning) as it is with bad (he was able to do so because of Treinen’s slow delivery). It can include great defense (Dodgers shortstop Tommy Edman saving a run in the sixth knocking by keeping a grounder in the infield) and unsightly (both of the Yankees’ corner outfielders playing doubles into triples).
I meant this more in a “chase Gerrit Cole early” way. The Dodgers didn’t do that. But they certainly got to the bullpen once Yankees manager Aaron Boone took the baseball from Cole. Tommy Kahnle and his changeup were a delightful circus act for most of this series. But the Dodgers were all over it in Game 5. Kiké Hernández smacked a single. Tommy Edman got an infield hit. Will Smith walked. Then all it took from there was a couple sacrifice flies against Yankees closer Luke Weaver, who was clearly toast by the end of his outing. We’ll put this game in the evidence file to show high-leverage relievers getting over-exposed in a series.
But the taxed Yankees bullpen could not protect the lead. Needing six more outs, manager Aaron Boone called upon reliever Tommy Kahnle. Two singles and a walk later, Boone was motioning for closer Luke Weaver to put out a fire. In the previous no-out, bases-loaded scenario in the fifth, Gavin Lux struck out. This time, he lifted a sacrifice fly to center field. Then, after a slumping Ohtani reached base on catcher’s interference, Betts hit a sacrifice fly of his own, then ran down the line pumping his fist as the go-ahead run scored.
Over the past month, watching Freeman has been painful. Not only because throughout the Dodgers’ first 11 playoff games he hadn’t mustered an extra-base hit. Freeman is clearly in pain. His sprained ankle throbs. His body aches. He is an eight-time All-Star, a future Hall of Famer, a World Series champion with Atlanta in 2021. He had been through a brutal year already, with his 3-year-old son, Max, suffering through a bout of Guillain-Barré syndrome. Freeman kept pushing through the pain, hoping the five days off since the NLCS would do his body enough good to do something memorable.

Stanton’s sixth-inning home run and subsequent stare — not to mention Flaherty’s forlorn face after realizing the mistake he’d made — left the Dodgers trailing 2-1, and marked the beginning of the scheming between Boone and Dodgers manager Dave Roberts, who had left in Flaherty for the third time through the order and paid dearly. Boone turning to Weaver in the eighth after Ohtani doubled off the top of the wall and advanced to third thanks to New York’s sloppy defense was strategically sound but failed to prevent the Dodgers from tying the score.
The Dodgers, who previously were based in Brooklyn, moving to Los Angeles in 1958, faced the Yankees for the first time in 1941 — and lost. The last battle against the Yanks was in 1981, where they took home the win.
