Carmen Sandiego (sometimes referred to as Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego?) is a media franchise based on a series of computer video games created by the American software company Broderbund. While the original 1985 Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego? video game was classified as a “mystery exploration” series by creators and the media, the series would later be deemed edutainment when the games became unexpectedly popular in classrooms. The franchise centers around the fictional thieving villain of the same name, who is the ringleader of the criminal organization V.I.L.E.; the protagonists (most often including the in-game character controlled by the computer user) are agents of the ACME Detective Agency who try to thwart the crooks’ plans to steal treasures from around the world, while the later ultimate goal is to capture Carmen Sandiego herself.

I remembered playing this retro side scroller when it released in 2010, and as soon as the NES-inspired soundtrack started, I figured it would all start coming back to me. But just like how listening to Snow over and over won’t help you shred like Red Hot Chili Peppers, hearing the music didn’t actually imbue my fingertips with magic nostalgia skill. I tried out a few different characters, but each time could only get around halfway through the first level.
Considering the levels are essentially straight lines, there’s a brilliant amount of creativity in these too. Literally everything is a weapon, from a basketball to a mic stand to your own teammate. Since you can revive your partner at zero health without costing them a life, there’s a popular tactic for Knives and Ramona where, if either is ever on single digit health, the other picks them up and hurls them at enemies, clearing a path for easy revival while also dealing serious damage to everyone else.
Multiplayer brings its own issues, however. I paired up Ramona and Knives, thinking that sisters could do it for themselves, but they quickly started fighting with each other. Friendly fire is constantly on, so if Knives is over in the corner fighting off a bunch of ninjas, when Ramona slides in to kick ass, she ends up walloping Knives on the way through. On the tougher levels, the screen gets very busy, and that’s with just two players. Adding in two more, plus the handful of extra enemies they’d bring, and it feels like friendly fire is a surefire way to break up the band over ‘musical differences’.

As fun as it is to take on enemies with Cloud’s Buster Swords, some of the best moments are found in the interactions shared with companions, which are rewarding for newcomers and fans of the original alike. One of the added features of Rebirth compared to Remake is an expanded open world, allowing for a lot more side quests and interactions. Simply put, the game is massive, and can feel overwhelmingly so. But once you find a groove, these additional narratives deepen the world and its citizens, which makes Cloud and AVALANCE’s plight feel all the more crucial. There’s little doubt that Square Enix will pull out of the stops for the final entry, which will make the Final Fantasy VII Trilogy go down as one of the all-time great game sagas. Not bad for a remake of a game already considered one the greatest triumphs in video game history.
Final Fantasy’s OG PlayStation family saw two high-flying siblings stand either side of a weird emo kid with great hair. FF IX is probably the most straight-laced of the bunch, which is really saying something given one of your party members is a giant frog chef. Nevertheless, it uses that breathing room to tell a classic fantasy story of heroes, a princess and Michelin-starred swamp cuisine.
The story of Ness, Paula, Jeff, and Poo’s journey across a strange, slanted version of America was such a vast departure from previous RPGs I’d played like Final Fantasy VI and Chrono Trigger, and its probably the game that I rented the most. It wasn’t drenched in fantasy tropes and pathos, but rather brimming with color, humor, and some of the weirdest characters and events I’d ever seen in a game. Simultaneously, it knows how to pack an emotional punch. So yeah, I rented it. Obviously, it didn’t come with the pack-in player’s guide, so I only made it so far before I had to return it. Then I rented it again. And again. And again. Eventually, my parents noticed that my college fund was being given to Blockbuster, so they nipped the problem in the bud and bought it for me. I downloaded the game before a couple months ago and it worked fine, but now reinstalling the game and the launcher wont download it always shows that it has 0 speed even tho I have enough space and my network is fine. any ways I can troubleshoot this?
