Luke Steele and Nick Littlemore met in 2000 after being introduced by Steele’s A&R executive, Simon Moor, in a bar in Sydney. Both were at the time signed to EMI and had already been working on different projects. Over the years that followed, the two collaborated on a number of occasions. Littlemore helped write the song “Tell the Girls That I’m Not Hangin’ Out”, which appeared on The Sleepy Jackson’s 2003 debut album, Lovers, and Steele had some artistic input in Littlemore’s 2006 art-rock project Teenager. After a falling out over the song on Lovers the co-operation ceased for a while, with Littlemore commenting “I’m a very intense person and I take things to heart”.
Since 2009 Littlemore has received medication to treat arthritis. From late 2009 Littlemore worked in Montreal, Canada with the Cirque Du Soleil as a composer and musical director for the touring arena show, Zarkana, which debuted on 29 June 2011 in New York. Pnau’s fourth album, Soft Universe, was recorded in London. Upon its release Mayes confirmed Littlemore and Steele were working on a second Empire of the Sun album. Littlemore expanded, “We just started writing two or three weeks ago in New York … Luke and I got into a studio, which was run by blind people – it was great. It’s good to be in weird places with Luke, we enjoy that. He has an extraordinary mind – it’s sounding so good”. As from July 2011, when not touring or performing, he lives in LA. During late 2011 Pnau toured through Australia promoting their album.

I was quite happy playing guitar , contributing my ideas and stepping back heard me singing a song, and rushed in and said, “What’s that?” I was like, “It’s just like, you know…” Nick was like, “That’s cool, you should really follow that up. You just need to get in a studio and record it”. So we jumped in the car, and he drove me out to his parents’ house, and we recorded that song … that was the start for me, where he helped me get the confidence.

I really enjoyed Empire of the Sun, they put on a fantastic show and the sound was great quality. My complaint is that Hollywood bowl packs in the people and there is not a lot of room for people to dance expressively because we are all shoulder to shoulder.
The last few years have been huge for the band with standout performances at the likes of Coachella, for their third time, Ultra Music Festival, Outside Lands and Governors Ball. The 2015 US West Coast tour culminated in a spectacular sold-out headline performance at the legendary Hollywood Bowl venue in front of more than 17,000 fans.
We LOVE Empire of the Sun music…BUT….we were disappointed that one of the band members didn’t show (and it was not mentioned at all even though apparent). Also there was a lot lip syncing and overdubbing. Guitar was live…vocals were not. Costumes good and crowd was plentiful…Hollywood Bowl always a good time.
