Alex Verdugo’s two-run home run, which eliminated a potential shutout, came with two outs in the bottom of the ninth. It was far too late for the Yankees to put together a run, and they now face a major deficit — one that no World Series team has ever overcome.

Top of the eighth: Kiké Hernández led with a single to left off Yankees reliever Tommy Kahnle. Tommy Edman followed with a broken-bat single that found the gap between third and short. Kahle walked Will Smith on four pitches to load the bases and end his night.
10 p.m. — Volpe gets on base with a single to Betts, scratching Vesia’s start with two outs on the board. The reliever shows his frustration, hitting Wells and putting Volpe in scoring position. Roberts immediately comes out of the dugout while Wells is attended to by staff.
Stafford was high school teammates with Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw. A television reporter asked Stafford if he would tell Kershaw he wanted them to lose Wednesday so they could win the title in Los Angeles.
After going hitless in the first inning in each of the World Series’ first four games, the Bronx Bombers erupted in the first inning of this one. Facing Flaherty, Aaron Judge shook off his persistent postseason struggles with a 403-foot homer to the opposite field in right. And when Jazz Chisholm Jr. went back to back with a solo shot of his own to make it 3-0, Yankee Stadium was shaking.
11:15 p.m. — LOS ANGELES TAKES THE LEAD! Betts has his moment and sac flies to Judge, scoring Edman. Smith advances to third with two outs before Freeman strikes out swinging to end the inning with six outs left for New York to stay alive.
After a one-out double from Judge in the eighth, Blake Treinen got some of the biggest outs of the evening when he got Stanton to fly out and Rizzo to strike out swinging. And with the ‘pen fully employed, manager Dave Roberts summoned his eighth pitcher of the evening – the most in a nine-inning World Series win. He went to Buehler, the winning pitcher in his Game 3 start on Monday and the guy who would have been in line to start a Game 7, for the final outs.
