Jurassic world game
The only time the Yankees got a runner to second base against Buehler came when Giancarlo Stanton doubled in the fourth. But when Anthony Volpe singled to shallow left with two outs, Yankees third-base coach Luis Rojas aggressively sent Stanton home, and the imposing DH was cut down by a perfect throw from Teoscar Hernández vlone rose shirt.
Freeman’s homer was the first walk-off grand slam in World Series history as well as the third Series walk-off homer of any kind for a team that was trailing, following Joe Carter’s World Series-winning home run for the Toronto Blue Jays in 1993 and Kirk Gibson’s Game 1-winning home run for the Dodgers in 1988. In particular, Freeman’s home run was widely compared to Gibson’s off the Athletics’ Dennis Eckersley, as both players were playing through injuries at the time and the Dodgers were down by a run and down to their last out in Game 1 of the World Series. Fox broadcaster Joe Davis’ call of “…she is gone!” echoed that of legendary Dodgers and then-NBC broadcaster Vin Scully for the Gibson homer, and Davis also added, “Gibby, meet Freddie!” Both Gibson’s and Freeman’s home runs were to right field at Dodger Stadium in almost the same spot and both came at 8:37 PM Pacific Time. Game 1 has been widely referred to as one of the greatest World Series games of all time.
“I’ve definitely got to step up, and I’ve got to do my job,” Judge said. “Guys around me are doing their jobs, getting on base, and I’m failing at backing them up. We’ve got to turn it around in Game 3.”
Game 1 world series
• The similarities with Gibson’s are remarkable — a hobbled superstar in Game 1 at Dodger Stadium. In fact, his and Freeman’s are the only walk-off homers in World Series history where the team was down to its final out. The only other such homer in any postseason round was by Houston’s Yordan Alvarez in the 2022 American League Division Series Game 1.
It was a moment that echoed one of the most famous swings in baseball history – Kirk Gibson’s walk-off home run to win Game 1 of the 1988 World Series at the same ballpark. The parallels were uncanny: Freeman, like Gibson, is hobbled by a leg injury that has nagged him throughout the playoffs and the ball landed in the exact same grandstand that Gibson’s home run landed 36 years ago.
The Astros added lefty Will Smith — the closer for the champion Atlanta Braves a year ago — to the roster for this round. Dusty Baker had a perfect situation to use him with lefties Brandon Marsh and Kyle Schwarber leading off the fifth against a tiring Justin Verlander. Marsh hit .188 against lefties and Schwarber .193 this season.
The two best teams from the National and American Leagues in 2024. The two expected MVPs. The two franchises with the most World Series history against each other. The two largest cities in the country.

Game 5 world series 2024
• Giancarlo Stanton hit his 18th postseason homer — two more than any other player in his first 41 postseason games. His seven this October set a record for most in a single postseason in the Yankees’ storied history.
The Dodgers of course capitalized. A run scored when Cole didn’t cover first. World Series MVP Freddie Freeman singled in two runs. Then Teoscar Hernández deposited a poorly located two-out, two-strike cutter into center field for a game-tying two-run double. The sloppy Yankees showed up and the Dodgers did what champions do. New York’s 5-0 lead was gone.
“This team has zero quit in it,” Dodgers reliever Blake Treinen said postgame. “If we don’t have the outcome that we want, there are always guys out there picking each other up and challenging ourselves to be better. That’s why we won tonight.”
“We’re obviously resilient, but there’s so much love in this clubhouse that won this game today,” Mookie Betts said on the field postgame. “That’s what it was. It was love. It was grit. It was just a beautiful thing. I’m just proud of us, and I’m just happy for us.”
